Wigle’s Limoncello Returns

Wigle Limoncello

It’s good to see Wigle Whiskey is back to their relentless release schedule, even if it occasionally makes this website look like a Wigle announcement board. But what do you know, Wigle has another release set for today, Thursday, September 24th. This time it is their Limoncello’s chance to grab headlines.

For each batch produced, Wigle employees and some dedicated volunteers hand peel lemons which are then steeped in Wigle’s made-from-scratch spirits with some sugar for just the right amount of sweetness.

Pick up a bottle of the bright yellow liqueur for $34 a 750 ml bottle (64 proof) at their distillery, the Ross Park Mall or delivered anywhere in the state of Pennsylvania.

This Oktoberfest, Make It Whiskey

If we’re admitting it’s pumpkin season then that means it’s also Oktoberfest season. And that normally means malty German lagers and beer festivals. But with festivals on hold, maybe its time to update your Oktoberfest traditions with a whiskey?

Wigle Whiskey’s O’zapft is is back. The whiskey is distilled from Penn Brewery’s Oktoberfest Lager and is said to have a taste “reminiscent of Scotch whisky, with notes of cherry, vanilla, and oak.” And why “O’zapft is” for the name? Well that’s the traditional proclamation that the mayor of Munich kicks off Oktoberfest with. In English, it translates to “it’s tapped.”

Pre-order O’Zapft is today for pickup on Friday, September 18th at the Pittsburgh Distillery. Bottles are $32 each for the 92 proof, 375 ml bottles. Pair your order with an Oktoberfest Feast for Two, and have you’re personal Oktoberfest.

4Four6 Kicks Off Tea Blended Gin Series

4four6 Swamp Monster Gin

4four6 Distillery in the Sharpsburg section of Pittsburgh is releasing Swamp Monster Gin today, Friday, September 4th. The tea-blended gin is made in collaboration with Milvale’s Tupelo Honey Teas, who have made a name for themselves with collaborative beers, including with their neighboring Grist House. This tea was the result of trying a variety of teas with gin to great result. Swamp Monster was actually a blend Tupelo made for The Coffee Buddha Coffee Shop which has since closed (pre-COVID). But with Coffee Buddha’s blessing, it became the featured tea in Swamp Monster Gin.

The gin is described as having “great depth and complexity with herbal and floral notes. The gin botanicals complement the blended tea beautifully.”

Swamp Monster Gin is available at the Northway Mall Market beginning at 3 pm or at the Sharpsburg Tasting Room starting at 4 pm. 750 ml bottles are $36 each.

4four6 Distillery opened in early 2020 and have a line of rums (White and Spiced) and gin (Clementine and American Dry). Swamp Monster is the first in 4four6’s Blended Gin Series collaborations with Tupelo. Look for another tea gin to be released in time for the holidays.

Lucky Sign Spirits Opens in Allegheny County

Lucky Spirits Opens in Pittsburgh

You have to believe luck is on your side to attempt to open a distillery during a global epidemic. And Christian Kahle and Matt Brudnok must believe they have luck in spades as this was actually the third location considered for their Lucky Sign Spirits that finally opened on August 8th, in Millvale, PA.

Lucky Sign’s first three products are a gin (eleven botanicals) and sourced bourbon and rye, bottled under their Card Shark sub-label. And they have plans on much more. The focus will be their own single malts. Experimentation will be a theme. Kahle told the Post-Gazette that they will highlight “tasting more of the distillate” over relying on barrel-aging. They’ve also been working on an amaro and a dandelion vodka but plan on producing everything from soju to aquavit. Kahle tells Next Pittsburgh that “we want to hide things in there so people don’t know what to expect — they have to drink it and experience it for themselves.”

Lucky Sign Spirits is located at 215 North Avenue in Millvale and has hours Wednesday through Sunday. They offer bottles and cocktails to go.

Wigle’s Leap Year Whiskey

While looking through its inventory, Pittsburgh’s Wigle Whiskey realized one of the barrels would be turning 4 this Leap Day. And of course they couldn’t resist turning the barrel into a Deep Cut, Bottled in Bond release.

The 100 proof whiskey is aged 4 years and has a mash bill of 64% rye and 36% malted barley. Wigle describes the whiskey as having “delicious notes of dark cherry, pepper up front and brown sugar on the finish.” Just 200 bottles of the whiskey will be available. Get your bottle at Wigle’s Ross Park Mall location or at the distillery on the 29th. The mall has the additional benefit cupcakes “baked with a prize” by Sinful Sweets in Pittsburgh.

A small number of bottles are also available for pre-order through Wigle’s website.
