Lancaster Distilling Hits Shelves of Select PA Fine Wine & Good Spirts Shops

Lancaster Distilleries at Fine Wine & Good Spirits

Pennsylvania has a long-standing reputation as a difficult place to buy alcoholic beverages. And that is certainly not without merit. But the state does do some very good things for its beer, wine and spirits producers. Not the least of which is allowing Pennsylvania distillers to get on the shelves of up to ten Fine Wine & Good Spirits stores even when they are way too small to normally be considered for stocking in the vast system.

And Lancaster Distilleries is the latest PA producer to land on the shelves at the state-run stores and they’re celebrating by offering a $20 gift card to the first customer at each location that purchases an LD spirit, posts it to social media and tags the distillery and names the PLCB store where they got the spirit.

Lancaster Distilling, which located in the Zoetropolis Cinema in downtown Lancaster produces gins, rums and vodka. All of which are available at the Fine Wine & Good Spirits shops.

Wigle Rolls Out Two Brandy Releases

Wigle Peach and Apple Brandy

This weekend, Pittsburgh’s Wigle Whiskey is rolling out not one, but two brandies. Look for apple and peach brandy at all of Wigle’s locations, plus get it shipped to any county in the Commonwealth.

The Apple Brandy qualifies for the VSOP designation, “Very Superior Old Pale” as it has been aged for four or more years. Wigle’s Apple Brandy is made exclusively from locally-harvested apples and has been aging in 53-gallon American Oak casks. The age brings the oak and vanilla notes forward, but there are floral and sweet notes from the apples as well.

375 ml bottles of the 80 proof Apple Brandy retail for $37. Order it now for pickup or delivery.

For just about any other distillery, one brandy release a year is about all you could expect, but Wigle drops two on the same day.

Described as “peach cobbler in a glass,” Wigle’s Peach Brandy is the result of hand-pitting more than 2,500 local peaches from Andrews Fruit Farm in Adams County. After fermenting with wine yeast, the result is distilled and then aged in a recently emptied bourbon barrel where it remained for two years.

This very limited release is $65 for a 375 ml bottle. Purchase is available for pickup or delivery.

Brandy is great on its own or as part of a classic cocktail.

Two Six-Year Whiskeys for Wigle

Wigle Releases Two Six Year Aged Whiskeys

Wigle Whiskey is releasing two six-year aged whiskeys. Wigle in the Woods was distilled with local heirloom wheat and has been aging for six years in a full-size cask. The one-off whiskey is described as having tasting notes that include, “warming notes of vanilla, cherry, and freshly baked bread compliment chilly moments spent outside.”

This weekend, a purchase of a Wigle in the Woods can be combined with a venison dinner for two for $90. 750 ml of bottles of Wigle in the Woods are $49 and available at Wigle locations.

If you thought that would be enough for one weekend in early November, you haven’t been following this website for very long. Wigle Whiskey is also releasing a six-year aged Single Barrel American Whiskey. Described as having a “unique sweetness that conveys notes of caramel apples, pecans, cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom with undertones of earl grey tea.”

The 94 proof, 750 ml bottles are available for pickup or shipping in Pennsylvania for $65 each.

Special Six-Grain Bourbon on Sale at Mason Dixon Distillery

Mason Dixon C.S. Reaser's Special Bourbon

In a frank post to Instagram, Yianni Barakos, co-owner and distiller of Mason Dixon Distillery in Gettysburg lays out the business realities of running a small distillery during a pandemic.

Barakos describes an October rush of sales but a reality of an early November of slump. So in order to get some more money coming in, he is planning on offering more whiskey and at a lower price than ever before.

Mason Dixon’s batch #7 of C. S. Reaser’s Special Bourbon is on sale today at the distillery and available for delivery across the state of Pennsylvania for a flat rate of $10. Mason Dixon’s bourbon has been consistently priced at $95 a bottle, but batch #7 will be $80 for one 110.8 proof bottle, two bottles for $140.

This bourbon will be unique in that it is made up of six types of Pennsylvania grain. Barakos blended three full-size barrels, including one made of malted bloody butcher corn. The bourbon is described as having caramel and toffee on the nose. “Candied spice on the tongue, perfect mouthful, and a beautiful lingering finish that makes you want to come back for another sip again and again.”

Mason Dixon Distillery is open for dining and drinks including in their tented and heated courtyard. The distillery also offers to-go ordering and curbside pickup.

Liberty Pole’s Annual Spiced Whiskey Goes on Sale Sunday, November 1

Liberty Pole Spiced Whiskey

Liberty Pole’s very popular Spiced Whiskey is set to go on sale this Sunday, November 1st at 10 am. But like most things in 2020, it will be different this year. In order to avoid crowding at the distillery, sales will only be available via Liberty Pole’s online store. Once ordered, bottles may be picked up at the distillery starting on Tuesday, November 3rd or they can be shipped directly to Pennsylvania residents.

Liberty Pole’s Spiced Whiskey is a blend of the distillery’s rye, cinnamon, allspice and oranges. That soaks together for about a week. Then brown sugar is added for a touch of sweetness. Think of it as a more sophisticated take on another Pennsylvania tradition, Rock & Rye.

The price of the Spiced Whiskey is $49 each and in addition to online, bottles will also be sold at PA Libations.

Boyd & Blair Adds Pumpkin Spice Mule To Lineup

Boyd & Blair Pumpkin Spice Mule

Boyd & Blair’s line of ready-to-drink cocktails gets a fall addition. Pumpkin Spice Mule is available now through the holiday season. The PSM starts with Boyd & Blair’s potato vodka and adds pumpkin chai tea, ginger and lime. Compared to the crisp and tart taste of a cider, the Pumpkin Spice Mule aims to be a balance of sweetness and spice.

The fall and holiday mule joins Boyd & Blair’s five other vodka based and one rum centric (daquiri) bottled cocktails. A great idea for entertaining without heavy lifting or for Zoom family gatherings. All of the western Pennsylvania based distillery’s RTD cocktails are available in one liter and flask sizes with the exception of the Pumpkin Spice Mule, which is available exclusively in liter bottles for $24.99 each. Or combine the fall mule with another bottled cocktail for $45.

Order the Pumpkin Spice Mule from Boyd & Blair’s online store or pick up a bottle at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Libations or Soergel Orchards in Wexford, PA.

Wigle Adds Bottled Manhattan To Lineup

Wigle Manhattan Cocktail

We raised an eyebrow when Wigle Whiskey announced the recent release of their bottled Old Fashioned was to be the last batch of the bottled cocktail for the year. That makes a bit more sense now that Wigle has released a Bottled Manhattan. The Manhattan begins with Wigle’s Organic Straight Rye Whiskey, adding Wigle Amaro Vermut and Wigle’s Pomander orange bitters to the recipe.

Bottles ae available at all Wigle locations including the recently opened Bakery Square location. And this weekend you can pair your bottle with a drive-through dinner for two of brown butter gnocchi. The $45 bottle is also available to be shipped across the Commonwealth.
